NACE International training courses are the most widely recognised corrosion protection training in the world. The training prepares every student for a comprehensive career in corrosion protection. This opens the door to more career opportunities and earnings potential. NACE's goal is to develop corrosion professionals that can support their mission of protecting people, assets, and the environment from the effects of corrosion. These courses are held in thirty four countries, and the NACE certification is recognised in one hundred and four countries. These courses provide hands-on training for those who work at the sharp end of the corrosion protection industry. NACE Certificates are the ultimate proof of competence in the corrosion protection industry, and demonstrate that the holder has received the very best training in their field.
The Corrosion Institute of Southern Africa (CorrISA) entered into a licence agreement with NACE in October 2004, and NACE Corrosion Prevention Training was launched into Southern Africa in July 2005.
NACE offers a wide range of corrosion protection training and at present the two main NACE programmes are offered by CorrISA. These are the
The Corrosion Institute is licenced to present any NACE course in Southern Africa and will do so if demand justifies.
During recent years there has been a great response from the corrosion protection industry in Southern Africa for NACE training.
South African instructors, approved by NACE, include Craig Botha, Chris Ringas and Neil Webb in the CP programme, and Neil Webb, Bruce Trembling and Gert Conradie for CIP.
2011 was a very successful year for NACE courses in South Africa. A total of 197 people have been trained on nine courses. In the six and a half years’ since inception over 900 people have received NACE training in South Africa.
Two courses were held in November; a CP 2 (Technician) class at The Corporate Conference Centre in Linksfield, Johannesburg, and a CIP 1 class at The Westville Conference Centre in Westville, Durban.
Seventeen students attended the CP 2 class in Johannesburg. The popularity of the CP Programme is increasing significantly and students came from as far afield as Nigeria, Pakistan and Tanzania. The pass rate, however, was disappointing with six students achieving CP 2 Certification. It has been decided to strictly assess all future applications for CP 2 courses to ensure that all applicants have either NACE CP 1 Certification or a minimum of five years’ work experience in cathodic protection. The Corporate Conference Centre was an ideal venue for all aspects of the course, particularly when there was a power outage on the day of the examinations and the on-site generator kicked in and ensured that there was no disruption to the programme. One of the instructors and five students stayed at the four-star Glendower View Guest House next door to the Centre. Everybody believed that the accommodation was excellent, cost-effective and very convenient, and considered that it was ideal for students from outside Gauteng. Our thanks go to Chris Ringas, the Lead Instructor, and Craig Botha, the support instructor, and also to Transnet Pipelines and Rand Water for sponsoring the practical equipment on the course. The students on the course were:
| Pieter Botes | Worley Parsons RSA |
| Ian Brown | Pipeline Performance Technologies (Pty) Ltd. |
| Jarret Dawson | Pipeline Performance Technologies (Pty) Ltd. |
| Sibusiso Desmond Duma | Afrox |

| Hendrik W van Wyk | Pipeline Performance Technologies (Pty) Ltd |

The CIP 1 course was the first to be held in Durban and it was very promising that it attracted twenty four delegates, the maximum number permitted by NACE. Twenty two people passed the examinations and were awarded CIP 1 Certification. The pass rate was very impressive and our thanks go to Neil Webb, the Lead Instructor, and the two support instructors, Bruce Trembling and Gert Conradie for a job well done. This was Gert’s first assignment after recently completing his instructor training in Houston in the U.S.A. The course attracted a number of people from outside KwaZulu Natal, including the U.S.A. and Nigeria The Westville Conference Centre was ideal for the course and the adjacent Westville B&B was perfect accommodation for the instructors and the out of town students. Our thanks go to Corrocoat SA for hosting the Practical Day at its facility in Seaview, and to Akzo Nobel for supplying the paint. The attendees on the class were:
